Vintage Micro Mosaic Floral Brooch made in Italy
A circular brass brooch featuring an intricate floral design composed of multi-colored glass tesserae. Produced in the Vatican Mosiac Studio these Micro mosaics originated in Rome in the late 18th century as souvenirs for wealthy travelers on the Grand Tour. Artisans used tiny glass pieces called tesserae, sometimes as small as a pinhead, to recreate famous paintings and landmarks. By the mid-20th century, these became popular export items featuring floral motifs. The item is in good vintage condition with all glass tesserae intact and no missing pieces. There is a slight aged patina on the brass metal setting which is typical for its age.
